Obedience and God's Protection

Having children, I am always trying to teach them obedience.  Not just to their mom and dad, but to the authorities and ultimately the Lord.    It is something that I also have to teach through example.  Sometimes God asks us to do things that are out of our comfort zone.  We can make excuses.  We are tired, too busy, or nervous to step out.

But in obedience, there is great joy.  Its a joy that is hard to explain.  But just knowing you are doing what He has called you to do is a beautiful feeling.

About a month or more ago, the Lord asked me to stop in and visit someone who is special to me from Belize.  She now lives in Texas and is attending college.  About a week before I planned to go, I messaged her.  I was not sure if she wanted me to come, but I knew I was supposed to go.  She wanted me to meet her downtown....way out of my comfort zone.  Driving somewhere unfamiliar and then in the city at that.  But with GPS, God opens doors.  LOL.  So, as the day approached, I watched the weather.  Even the night before I went and bought an umbrella.  Big storms were coming.  I was debating that I just shouldn't go.

But I asked Lee.   He said you have talked about this forever.  That God wants you to go.

So Friday morning, I woke up early.  I am a prepared person.  I had a cooler, packed my lunch and drinks.  Set my GPS.  I was on my way.  Within 30 minutes, it was storming.  I decided to get off in La Grange and use the restroom and get a cold drink.  It was a hole in a wall place, but I chose it because it had an overhang that I could halfway park under in the non stop rain.

I got back in the van and my phone beeped loudly and said to take shelter because there is a tornado in your area.  I texted Lee and said what should I do?  He didn't answer because he was in the shower.  That text was at 8:55.  I waited a few minutes and decided to go ahead and try to get out of the area.  I love how God protects us even when maybe we don't make the best decisions.

As I got on the freeway, a song I haven't listened to in years came on my shuffle.  The words were, "I have found a peace that ploughs on through the storm..."  I saw a wreck or something up ahead, so was driving slowly.  The sky ahead was green, then all of a sudden, it was dark as night.  I have never experienced something like this.

Still, my music was playing.  I was driving so slow.  I had chills all over.  The line around that time, was "We are longing for the glory of the Lord..."  And then rain came suddenly and intensely, like when you are in a car wash.  I literally could not see.  I felt this was it.  That I was not going to survive...that I was definitely in the tornado.  Yet, I had a peace.  That I am ready.  I love the Lord, am devoted to Him, and if I am about to die, that it is okay:)

All of this is happening in minutes.  I'm barely moving and I see lights.  Not the vehicle, but I could tell it was a policeman and he was assisting a long tractor trailer.  I got behind him.  I could not see the road or his vehicle.  I simply followed him right off the freeway and parked with about ten other cars along the side of the road to wait it out.  There was lighting like crazy, the van was shaking, the rain was intense.

And then Lee called...

He said, Honey, you should probably seek shelter if that is what they are saying.  The storm is right over you!

At that point, I realized I was shaking uncontrollably.  I began to pray for Jesus to calm the storm.  To move the tornado and to let me get to where I was going!!

And within a minute, we were back to a gentle rain.

Slowly, people began to get back on and I just kind of followed.  Within five minutes, there was a divide of the dark skies and sunny skies up ahead.  God brought me through that storm safely.  It was sunny and beautiful the rest of the day.

God was in that van with me.  I was not alone.  His presence was thick.

I believe God covers us when we are obedient.  He covered me.  He protected me.  It is something I experienced totally alone, but have not been able to stop thinking about it.

I had a great meeting with my friend.  I know I was supposed to see her.  I know God told me to.

That night, I was at Josh and Robin's apartment and decided to look up the news that day.

At 9;05, a tornado had hit and destroyed many buildings in La Grange along the highway that I was on.  No one was injured, but buildings were crumpled like tin foil.

Who knows?  Maybe even the gas station I was at.

God protected me.  I know it.  I am thankful.  And yeah, this is what walking with God looks like.

Licensing and looking what God has done...

A few years ago, when Convention was in Anaheim, I felt the Lord telling me to get Licensed with Foursquare.  It is hard to explain why when people ask me.  But sometimes I think we don't always know why the Lord asks us to do the things He does.  We are to simply obey.  Sometimes we can only see one little step ahead, not the whole path.  When the Lord asked us to lay down our life in Katy and move to Belize, we only knew it was to plant a church.  We did not know that our two daughters were there waiting for us.  They did not know that either:)

This past week, Lee ministered on Depression.  It was a great, real service.  Because sometimes we just need to be real and minister where the people need it most.  So many Christians walk around battling depression and feel very alone.  The enemy loves to isolate us or make us feel guilty for feeling that way.  And I feel that the attacks of depression are getting more intense.  Suicide is on the rise.  Even among believers.  Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy.

When I was in Belize, there were some things I could not share on my blog.  But now that I am home, I feel a little more free to share some of the experiences I went through.  And so often, I felt God was all I had.  I was at some of my lowest and some of my highest those 7 1/2 years.

Moving to Belize was the hardest thing I ever walked through.  I loved my life in Katy.  I loved my church.  I loved being close to family for the first time in our marriage.  It was very hard for me to understand why.  I remember the October before we told the church, we were at a beautiful pastors' retreat in  a hotel that had an inside atrium.  I sat on the balcony and asked God what we had done wrong that He was sending us away.  I felt that we would be forgotten (and this is a lie that the enemy held over me so many times those 7 years).  But right there on the balcony, very clearly, God spoke to me.  He told me, "I am not demoting you and Lee.  I am promoting you.  I need a couple like you, a family like you, in Belize."  So many times throughout the years, I would have to remind myself what He had spoken to me.

So often I minister to people who are grieving.  In fact, we have several widows in our church family.   Also, with adopting children, they have all dealt with grief at one time or another.   I think that is one of the things the Lord has used in my life to turn around and minister to others.

I deeply grieved leaving Katy and Life Church...  When we were released as pastors to go around and fundraise, I suddenly had no church family...  When my house sold quickly, and I moved my family from a beautiful four bedroom home (my dream home) to a cramped two bedroom apartment, I was overwhelmed with deep sadness.  Then that Fall, we found out my thryroid was dangerously unhealthy.  And again, I felt that I had to walk through that with a brave face, but was hurting inside.  How could God let that happen to me when I walking in obedience?  My body and emotions were going crazy.  I was relocating my family from house to apartment to living with people to moving to a foreign country...  It was just too much!

But even still...

God was there.  God was there with compassionate doctors who helped me.

God was there with our family and closest friends taking us in, helping us in every way.

God was there in providing a home...miraculously...within the first week of moving to Belize.

God was there, doing miracles, one after the other.

But the other thing that the Lord reminded me of was the great depression I went through when we moved to Belize.  And that if I had given up, packed my suitcase and moved home?  whatever that would have meant...how it would have prevented God from being able to use our family like He did.

Our inward focus and feeling bad for ourselves can keep the things happening that the Lord wants to happen.

When Lee spoke on Sunday of his own journey  with depression when we first moved back to the US, I was reminded of my journey when we first moved to Belize.

We moved to Belize right before the hot season, the season where everyone burns everything and it fills your home with smoke, because your windows are open.  I was adjusting to having an older girl living with us.  I was adjusting to everyone being home all the time.  Trying to learn to shop and cook in a country where everything was just harder.   Homeschooling three children while helping my husband plant a church.  It was suffocating for me.   It was SO HOT all the time.  There literally was no relief.  My thyroid meds were trying to adjust.  I was homesick.  We couldn't leave because we needed to establish residency.

When a year had passed and once again, we were in another awful dry, hot season, I broke.  I was so tired all the time.  I was so down.  I was tired of sweating all day long.  I was weary of the hard physical labor that it took to simply run a home.  I went to the doctor at the clinic to check my thyroid levels.  I just knew that had to be it.  I remember going into the ob/gyn office...she was the only doctor I had those 7 years.  She is Cuban and had stitched Erika's heel that first year, and had seen us for various things.  As I sat across from her, she checked my blood pressure, weighed me, all the basic things.  And told me my thyroid levels were fine.  But I was not fine.  I began to cry.  She asked me why didn't I go home (to the states) for a visit?  I said I couldn't for several more months.  She said why didn't I start walking for exercise?  I said because its TOO HOT.  Then she sweetly told me that she thought I was depressed.  Then I really began to cry.  She came and hugged me.  I will never forget the compassion that this doctor showed me...and all I could think is I am the missionary.  I am the one that is supposed to be strong.  And the guilt only increased.  But a special relationship was built that day.  One that I would need as I would later have some very real health problems that she would walk me through.

The end of this story is that my BEST FRIEND, Francine, went way out of her comfort zone and came and visited me in Belize.  And that....that visit, that love, pushed me into  a place where I felt I could make it a few more months until we could have that first trip home.  Her willingness to leave her comfort and come and just be with me...was literally Jesus' hands and feet to me.

And the Lord reminded me this Sunday during Lee's message on Depression of that time in my life.  When I let the enemy have the victory for a short time, but how God was so desperate for me, that He showed His love in a very tangible way.  And because of that love, I was able to continue and go deeper and see more fully my purpose in the journey to Belize.  When we returned to Belize, after that first trip home, I lived more purposely, to make Belize my home.  I began to see it as my home, not just where I was visiting.  And I think that also helped.  But I also saw how God had helped me and was truly there through it all.  And we began to leave every May (since it was the very hottest month to be there).

So, why did I want to get Licensed?  I am not really sure.  I just know the Lord put it in my heart and I was obedient.

Working Out

A couple years ago, after I had my gall bladder removed, I had a real awakening to my eating habits and exercise habits.  So I have changed a lot of the way I eat...some of which was forced by my body not handling fats well anymore.  And I committed to walk three times a week.

I have loved being back in the states.  Close to my home are some nice walking trails and I also love just walking around my neighborhood.  Either alone or with Kailey.  When I am alone, it is great spending time with the Lord.  When I am with Kailey, we have some of our best talks:)  So it is a win either way.

We also have a treadmill, but I prefer outside because I am forced to continue.  With the treadmill, it is easy to stop.  When I am on a trail or in the neighborhood, I am forced to continue.

This morning it is freezing outside, so after I took the girls to school, I hopped on the treadmill with a distance goal in mind.  I also have a million things to do today, like cleaning the house, laundry, etc.  It is a Monday for me.  So halfway through, I was just going to stop, justifying that I would burn calories cleaning the house.  But I was also listening to worship and felt even though I was really tired, I needed to push through.  We never regret working out at the end of the day.  And the Lord really related it to our walk with Him.  When the going gets tough, we want to give up.  Whether it is walking with Him in general, or doing something He has called us to do.  And kid you not, the second half of my time flew by as I just focused on time with the Lord.

So many have walked away from the Lord because a "man" hurt them.  It doesn't make sense to me.  Don't give up on God just because a human hurt you.  That is what humans do...they are imperfect.  God is faithful.  I am 45 years old and He has never failed me yet.  Quite often when we get to that mountain, we want to give up.  So many miss out on so many blessings from the Lord simply because they were not willing to fight the battle in the spiritual realm.  Those of us who are seasoned in the Lord need to help those who are just starting out.

I do not say these words from a teaching.  I say them because I have lived them.

Every church plant.  Every building project.  Every mission trip.  Every adoption.  Every sickness.

I have fought so many battles.

And sometimes I am just tired.  I just want to stop.  Coast for a while.

But every single time...I push through.  And every single time, I have seen His promises fulfilled.

So, stay on the treadmill.  Just focus on the Lord...He will give you a strength that you don't know where it is from.

Six Months

Today marks 6 months of being back in the U.S.  I believe there is significance in time.  I remember when we moved to Belize, they told us it would take about a year for it to feel like home.  I feel like with each of my kids, whether by birth or adoption, it has taken about a year to adjust to the "new" person.  So I am halfway there.  My home is feeling more like my home with each new memory we make here.  Getting a puppy brought a new life to our home.  Made it more homey.

I notice that I feel the sting of reverse culture shock a little less.  But it is still there.  I feel it is easier to move to America than to move to Belize.  Things are more convenient here.  But there are things that are harder here.  More pressures to keep up, do things more professionally.  Some of that is living in Katy.  Planting a church here, 18 years after the first time we planted here, the pressures are higher.  Life is more complicated here too.

The holidays were different for me.  Like better in some ways, but then not in other ways.  I was thankful to be with family.  We have missed that.  I loved bringing in New Years with old friends.  I love celebrating with the familiar.  But I found that I missed some of the simplicity of our Belizean holidays.   I missed the way everything just shuts down for days around Christmas in Belize.   I missed going swimming at the beach the day after Christmas with just my kids.  Its a tradition we started in our later years.  I miss a lot of the foods from Belize.  I made Stewed Chicken, Rice and Beans this week, but it was not the same.  Even with Marie Sharps.  There is no comparing to Morencos!

I am loving our church family.  Some I knew from before, but some are new in my life.  I love the hospitality of the people in our life.  Love the community that has developed so quickly.  Love that we have a church full of people who are willing to serve.

I loved having all my kids here for Christmas, in our new home.  It was cozy and just pure joy to me.  I love having a daughter in law.  Love that Tori lives close and so we actually see her pretty often since she is brave to drive back and forth to college now.

Six months.  Wow.  A lot has happened in that time.  More than my brain can wrap around.  Hopefully the next six months will be a little calmer.

Weight of the World

Yesterday was our first big event as GO Church.  As people began to come, and we were starting to worship, I just felt the weight of the world.  God has brought us the most amazing people, hungry to serve and reach out to this huge city of Katy.  But He has also brought us many wounded hearts.  I know the weight of being in ministry.  I have been most of my life.  I know that many people are in our congregation that have been hurt in other congregations.  I don't ever want to be that...the person who hurts another.  I want Lee and I to always encourage and walk with people where they are.  Love them as they walk with God.

At the end, I went and talked to a few different people, just trying to connect.  Even if we pastored them before, a lot has happened since we were gone.  Their family dynamics have changed.  And so have ours.  But out of nowhere, I just felt complete exhaustion.  Like I was not sure I would be able to carry my crock pot to the car and drive home.  But I did.

This morning, I took a walk in my neighborhood.  One for the exercise.  Two, just to be alone with Jesus.  He reminded me that this burden is not from Him.  He takes the weight.  I need to just walk close to Him, listen to His heart, as He is sending the people to Lee and I because He trusts us.  This is the same word He gave to me before we went to Belize.  That He was sending us, because He trusted us with the people who He would send to us.

Please pray for us.  This journey of church planting is intense.  God is doing great things, but the spiritual warfare is heavy.  Whenever God is about to do big things, we know the battle is real.  We need His strength as we make decisions.  We need His strength as we pour into people.

Public School

The two youngest in the family have now been in public school for almost six weeks.

Last night, we went to meet all of their teachers.  They were so excited to take us to all their classrooms.  They have a beautiful school and I am so thankful for all of their teachers.

I was amazed how each of the teachers really seemed to know my children.  In just six weeks.

I have homeschooled Erika her entire life until now.  It is weird to have someone else pouring into her life.  It is nice too.  And I love how they see her strengths just like me.  And two teachers said she didn't act homeschooled at all.  I guess that's a compliment:)

Aviya, we have not had as long, but I definitely know her very well.  I loved how the teachers spoke encouraging words over her life.  That they saw how smart she was and a hard worker.  I know for her it is a greater transition, but I was so proud to see that she is a joy to her teachers.

I feel like both of my girls have an opportunity to bloom outside of me now.  And I have an opportunity to do whatever it is that God has for me in this new season.

I remember last year feeling that I could not even complete a thought at times.  That I did not have any time just to think or anything.  I am thankful for this new season.  I am still busy, but there are some breathing breaks in between.

Coming home from Belize is a journey.  I am very thankful for my life here.  I feel very blessed.  But I realize at times that I am still transitioning.  Sometimes the enormity of it all, the decisions, little things really overwhelm me.  It is just an entirely different culture here and I am still getting used to it again.

September 21st

Today is Belize Independence Day and once again there are tears in my eyes as I still have my heart in two countries.  One of our biggest outreaches was that we passed out 7000 waters each year to the people along the parade route.

Honestly, I hated the work that day entailed.  The unbearable heat mixed with rain.  The long wait to begin.  The exhaustion afterward.

But I LOVED that day because it was a day the whole church worked hard together.  And after we would go get Barbecue.  And then we would crash and call it a day.

One of my friends just sent a video of everyone working hard, setting up.  And I began to cry as I saw all the people I loved.  And that was my life for so many years.

I love my life here, but just as there was sadness of things missed while I was in Belize, now there is sadness of things and people missed now that I am in Texas.

The life of a missionary is forever loving two different families.
