Life in Belize is so different than in America. For example, in America, if you have to go to the restroom while you are traveling or out for the day, you typically can find a gas station or fast food restaurant to stop at. Not in Belize. And then when you find a restroom here, it can be pretty sketchy what you find. So, for example, yesterday, even being gone all day long, we had a nice restroom (kind of) at the falls and then a gorgeous one at the resort…but then all of us had wait until we got home. So, when I travel, I tend to not drink as much on those days, which is not good. Of course, we sweat more here too…so that is good.
The other thing is food. You take food and drinks with you: Especially if you are going to be gone all day. You cannot necessarily count on there being a restaurant available. Or if you are planning to eat out, that is it. It has to be planned. Like you know exactly where you are going to eat, not just wait and try to find something when you get there. Or you may not find something. Like yesterday, the only place really to eat was at this fancy resort, which thankfully, Lee had already made arrangements with. Otherwise, we would have been living off of snacks from 10 in the morning til 9 at night. But we were blessed to have a very nice, although a little pricey, lunch. But we were paying for enjoying the falls, etc. as well.
With children, everytime we head out on an adventure, there is just a certain amount of things we always make sure to take: lots of water and drinks and ice, lots of snacks, and extra clothes for everyone, even the adults. Sunscreen, bugspray, toilet paper, wipes (we use them to clean our feet especially).
Even though, we had the scary experience of getting the van stuck yesterday, we are so thankful for our van. We always have room to take someone with us. We never had that opportunity before. This allows us to strengthen relationships with those we are ministering to. I am thankful for the air conditioning…it does tend to get warm in the back, but it is still cooler than no air conditioning. It is great for the kids to lie down, for example, after the long day yesterday. The kids all slept all the way home…it was nice. I am thankful that we can play worship, like Adam and Courtney’s album, for everyone to listen to. I love the feeling of having everyone packed up safe in our little van…
Today, I am covered in mosquito bites and nursing a twisted knee. Yesterday was an adventuresome day and we so greatly enjoyed it. So my wounds are worth it. I guess? ;) Need to find a solution for all the itching, but it was a great day and my kids are tired out today so that is good. Too bad they have to wash the car and van today, but it is good for them too.
